About the Item
A rare antique German novelty porcelain figure ‘What a Night’ produced by renowned makers Schafer
Vater and dating from around 1910.
The quirky bisque porcelain figure is one of a range of similar figures which were produced at the beginning of the 20th Century. The company was founded by Gustave Schafer and Guenther Vater in Germany in 1890 and quickly became extremely successful. They focused on producing high quality items in hard paste porcelain and became known for their comical and figural items. The figures were particularly popular in the USA and by 1910 the American firm of Sears Roebuck
Co began to import and distribute these. Today these figures remain highly sought after and collectable.
This rare and delightful example portrays a man wearing a raincoat and with a raised collar and a top hat pulled down over his face carrying an umbrella and pointing forward with his head lowered as if confronting gale force winds. The figure hollow cast figure stands raised on an oval base and is exceptionally well detailed and has been hand painted in naturalistic colors. The reverse side has been glazed in brown and portrays an incised swirling wind. The figure is typically not marked however has an incised number 1888 to the unglazed base.
Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in the UK Art Market
