About the Item

Sculpted clay head of a beautiful African woman. Light sandy brown with rough texture. A hand sculpted piece. Head adorned with a decorative circular patterned crown. A hole in the mid to lower front neck, likely for ventilation of the material in the firing process. There appears to be an ovular egg-shape proportion to this piece from the profile view. From the front and back the head appears to be of a normal proportion. The face appears to have a stoic but confident expression. The eyebrows are especially raised above the eyelids, adding to the expressiveness of the face. We believe this may be in the style of the Ife tradition (12th-15th Century). According to Yoruba belief, Ife was the site where humans were modeled in clay by the divine sculptor Obatala. They are sculptures of African Kings (Onis) created in a naturalistic style. It is unknown what the actual age of this interesting piece is having been acquired from the estate of a deceased collector. No marks on the bottom or back. In excellent condition. Gentle wear consistent with age and use. Measurements: Width: 7.5" / 2.95276 cm Depth: 7.5" / 2.95276 cm Height: 10.75" / 4.2322835 cm.
