About the Item
Artist and sculptor Ruth Keller Schweiss (Missouri 1920-2006) "Ballet Dancers" abstract figural sculpture in bronze with applied patina on marble base, c. 1965. Her sculptures show the beauty, flow and flexibility of the human body. Perhaps she modeled her sculprtures after famed dancers Alexandra Danilova and Frederic Franklin or Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev.
Inquire, I have other pieces of her work, including smaller and larger garden sculptures.
Ruth Keller Schweiss born in Terre Haute, Indiana, but lived the rest of her life in St.Louis. She earned her certificate of Fine Arts from Washington University, later had a three year fellowship with Carl Milles at the Cranbrook Art Academy in Michigan, and later taught sculpture in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her first one-man show was in 1961, she did many shows and exhibitions, among the National Academany of Design in New York, The Detroit Art Museum and St. Louis Art Museum where she received many awards. Her work can be found in Museums, clubs, gardens and many private collections in America. This was all accomplished by 1963 and mentioned in her catalog. One of her most famous local sculptures "Ballerinas" 1990 Bronze 12′ x 20′ x 12′, at the Ritz Carlton Clayton Missouri. Ruth worked in, bronze, wood, aluminum, plaster and clay.
She met Frank Lloyd Wright while at Cranbrook, he later tapped St. Louis architect William Adair Bernoudy FAIA to design her home and studio in 1950. Bernoudy was in the charter class of apprentices of the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin Fellowships in Spring Green Wisconsin. I met Ruth back in the mid 90s, when I purchased a MCM home near her, I use to drive by her house everyday, as I left and returned. It was a true gem, with its sloped roof, so close to the ground, it looked like a ski jump. Her sculptures dotted the landscape and filled her interior. Sadly the house was demolished.
Ruth Schweiss is like other artist being rediscovered in the age of the internet , especially now women artist that worked in the Mid-Century Modern era. Most of Ruth's sculptures were of the human form, dancers, ballerinas and even Frogs.
The full body of her work is similar to artist Robert Holmes (1927-2016), or contemporary artist Don Wiks, Pierre Yermia, Sophia Harms-van Estrick, Nando Kallweit, Olga Prokop-Misniakiewicz, Wim van der Kraan, Susanne Kraisser, Ramiz Barquet, Yann Guillon and Rebecca J. Grob.
