Sergio Ponzio, who began his career as a painter of still-life works, transitioned to sculptor in 1968, marking the start of an unbroken exploration of materials and their possibilities. Between 1968 and 1975, Ponzio worked with diverse mediums, including wood, iron, galvanized sheet metal, and copper, often experimenting with bas-reliefs in stratified wood. His work was deeply influenced by Turin’s vibrant artistic scene, particularly by Nerone Ceccarelli and Gruppo NP2, with these sepcific works we also have Arman in mind, a Franch sculptor who made similar pieces in Bronze. Although Ponzio remains a lesser-known figure within this Italian movement, his work stands out for its strength and distinctive character.
As a music lover, Ponzio drew inspiration from everyday objects, particularly musical instruments like guitars and violins, which resonate strongly in his work.
