About the Item

France / 1947 / Statue St. Yves / Jos Kervella for Henriot Quimper / faïence polychrome / Religious A rare and beautifully modeled faïence statue depicting Saint Yves, by Jos Kervella for the renowned Henriot Quimper manufactory in 1947. Founded in 1685, Henriot Quimper is know the world over for its know-how of the “Quimper Paint Touch” and the tradition of producing and hand-painting every piece of faience in-house. Henriot Quimper continues the tradition producing the traditional patterns featuring the Breton figures as well as many new more modern designs. The superbly talented resident artists at Henriot still hand-craft every piece of Quimper Pottery. Each piece of Quimper faience is completely handmade and painstakingly hand-painted. Each piece of Quimper is unique. One artist hand paints each piece from start to finish then signs the piece and marks it “Henriot” to ensure its authenticity. Rendered in vibrant polychrome glaze, the figure of St. Yves, the patron saint of lawyers and the poor, stands with open hands, symbolizing generosity and justice. The sculptural composition is characterized by its stylized form, distinctive Quimper color palette, and the refined craftsmanship for which Henriot has been celebrated since the late 17th century. The figure’s deep black robe contrasts elegantly with the vivid purple mantle and white fur-trimmed collar, creating a striking visual balance. Signed “Henriot Quimper” on the base.
