About the Item
18th-century statuary marble head depicting Artemis, Greek goddess of hunting, the moon, and wilderness. The goddess is depicted with an oval face, almond-shaped eyes, full lips, and hair styles reminiscent of fourth-century BCE models. Artemis was a highly revered deity in ancient Greece; in fact, her temple in Ephesus, with its enormous size and rich decorations, was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
