About the Item
Commemorative silver medal issued in 1995 to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Torquato Tasso (1544–1595), one of Italy’s most celebrated poets, best known for his epic poem La Gerusalemme Liberata.
Front (obverse): Portrait of Torquato Tasso wearing a laurel wreath, with the inscription "TORQUATO TASSO · 1595–1995". The artist's signature “Pernazza” appears below the shoulder.
Back (reverse): Depicts the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, with the legend “MMDCCXLVIII AB URBE CONDITA / XXI APRILE MCMXCV” — which refers to the 2748th year since the legendary founding of Rome, celebrated on April 21, 1995.
Silver 925 (hallmark on rear).
This piece was issued by the Comune di Roma or an Italian numismatic society as part of cultural celebrations and honors both Rome’s founding and the poet’s anniversary.
