About the Item
These very high quality well carved African tribal stone portrait busts depict a Zulu chief and two high-ranking Zulu tribe’s people.
These highly decorative figures are constructed from several different sections of brightly coloured verdite or soapstone, which is native to parts of Africa. It is a relatively soft stone which can be cut and carved.
These small well detailed portrait busts were locally produced, circa 1930. They were made as mementoes to be offered for sale to wealthy travellers enjoying the African safari and exploring the local culture.
This eye-catching garniture of busts displays nicely together. Two of the figures are signed on the reverse, and all three pieces are in excellent condition with no repair or restoration.

A carved soapstone Raj period Indian study of elephants and two Maharajas C1910
Located in Central England, GB
A fine Indian Raj period carved soapstone study of a large elephant carrying two Maharajas and their guide seated high on its back in an elaborate carriage surrounded by a group of young elephants. This superb carving shows great skill from the highly proficient craftsman who has deeply carved and pierced the study with three dimensional detailing. And just to make his work more difficult the body of the large elephant is hollow carved and pierced with a small perfectly carved study of another elephant at its centre which is incredibly difficult to achieve working through the tight delicately carved and pierced scrolls which form its body.
Indian, circa 1910
