About the Item

This ‘Kaloric’ travel iron, designed in 1956 by Raymond Loewy, embodies the direct legacy of American streamlining while continuing the evolution of Art Deco trends. Made of Bakelite and chrome-plated steel, it reflects the fluid, shiny aesthetic that, from 1923 to 1936, asserted the power of geometric modernism and the influence of aerodynamics. Streamlining – literally ‘the course of a stream’ – was inspired by the perfect shape of a drop of water, whose surface minimises turbulence and resistance. Transposed to everyday objects, this principle gave rise to sleek silhouettes, designed for efficiency and speed. Loewy, a French designer who immigrated to the United States in 1919, became one of the masters of this formal language. Like his famous phrase, “Ugliness doesn't sell,” this travel iron encapsulates his vision: a functional object enhanced by a modern, smooth, continuous aesthetic that is almost dynamic despite its immobility. With its new materials—shiny aluminum, Bakelite, early plastics—and its rounded lines typical of the streamline style, this small device bears witness to the last great stage of Art Deco, where elegance meets technical rationality. Now considered a rare piece, this model is iconic enough to be exhibited at the Musée Électropolis – L'Aventure de l'électricité in Mulhouse, highlighting its historical value, its importance in 20th-century domestic design, and the lasting mark left by Raymond Loewy on modern industrial aesthetics.
