Henri Etienne Dumaige 1830-1888 Cleopatra before Caesar, bronze
This Orientalist group alludes to the spectacular meeting of Caesar and Cleopatra. She arrives rolled up in a carpet. It draws on the painting 'Cleopatra before Caesar' by Jean-Leon Gérôme. The rouge marble base is included in the height as it is an integral part of the sculpture. Dumaige was an important sculptor who exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1863 to 1886. He was an important proponent of the Orientalist movement and achieved here in sculpture what the Orientalist painters did in paint. It is interesting that the prices of Orientalist bronzes have not yet followed the spectacular rise of the paintings, they may yet do so.
