About the Item
Electronic sculpture by Alan Rath, titled "Optical Cylinder IV" created in 2008. Featuring a CRT monitor, custom electronics, and constructed of aluminum, and acrylic. It stands 64 1/2" tall including the base, and the acrylic cylinder that houses the monitor and electronics is 11" tall and 14" in diameter.
Alan Rath is known for his unique approach to contemporary art through his creation of mechanical sculpture. Rath showed interest in art at an early age and was inspired by the kinetic sculpture of Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely after seeing their work in a museum.
Rath was born in Ohio in 1959 and even as a child experimented with electronic devices. His quest for knowledge about electronics and design led him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he majored in Physics but later switched over to Electrical Engineering. Before graduating from college in 1982, he had the opportunity to work at MITs Visual Language Workshop, the Architecture Machine Group, and the Center for Advanced Visual Studies. As a self-taught artist, he converted his artistic vision into tangible structures.
In 1984 Rath moved to California and settled in the San Francisco Bay Area where the necessary technology was available to him. Working with digitizers, microchips and cathode ray-tubes, he creates a cast of robotic beings with magnified images of blinking eyes and moving lips. His animal-like constructions are carefully crafted focusing on color and form but also have a humorous element about them.
His sculptures have been shown all over the world in solo exhibitions in Europe, Asia, and the United States. In 1996 he participated in the Biennial exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and has also shown at the Haines Gallery in San Francisco. Alan Rath lives in Oakland California and continues to create his sculptures and display them nationally.
Alan Rath passed away on October 27, 2020.

Born in Rotterdam, Holland Loet Vanderveen's childhood home was close to the zoo. It was during this period in life that he developed his love for animals. At night he would listen to the sound of the animals in the zoo, and fantasize about African safaris... fantasies which were eventually realized. During the WWII bombardment of Rotterdam the animals were destroyed as well as his home. These events led Vanderveen to a new phase in his life. He escaped occupied Holland for England, and was decorated for valor by Queen Wilhelmia. He served in the R.A.F. during the war.
After WWII, Vanderveen lived in Zurich, London and New York working as a fashion designer. Creatively unsatisfied with his profession he began private ceramic studies with the head of the Far Eastern department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Fong Chao). He mastered Chinese...

Large abstract ‘Verticali’ sculpture in by Roberto Cordone, Italy 1972
Located in Sittard, LI
Large abstract 'Verticali' sculpture by Italian artist Roberto Cordone, Italy 1972. This sculpture is made out of polished stainless steel and created for the German headquarters of Johnson & Johnson in Düsseldorf, this is a unique piece. All in a good original condition with wear and patina consistent with its age.
The sculpture stands 285cm (112.2 inch) tall, is 101cm (39.7inch) wide on both side and rests on a 116cm (45.6inch) round base.
The Verticali sculptures were conceived for the outdoors, anchored to the earth, often in correspondence with the surrounding architecture. They are stainless steel sculptures, larger than life, built by using segments of cylinders and spheres welded together in symmetrical or asymmetrical relationships.
Because of their highly polished, reflective metal surfaces, these sculptures reflect the surrounding environment and architecture and are in a constant process of change
Roberto Cordone (born 11 April 1941 in Vallecrosia, Liguria) is an Italian artist and sculptor. He has spent most of his career in Cologne, Germany. His most famous art work...
