About the Item

18th century Italian leaf fragment with a natural forming baroque pearl and barite crystals on barite in matrix and polished agate base. The crystals have encrusted themselves around the matrix, forming an organic sculpture in its own right. These barite crystals come from intense mining operations and are excavated at depths over 1000 feet. They are difficult to mine due to confined spaces and high temperatures. When found, they are usually designated to museums and private collections. This valuable natural specimen combined with the Italian church fragment creates a piece made up of historical importance.
