About the Item

This Italian marbled terra cotta ball comes from Oak Springs Farm, the Virginia estate of Paul Bunny Mellon. The sphere is late 19th century and has been set on a well-turned walnut stand. Made as purely a decorative object the sphere is very interesting and large-scaled. The marbled color of the sphere is achieved not with paint but with a careful mixing by hand of different colors of terra cotta. The sphere is slightly flattened on the bottom and fits snuggly into the top of the stand which is most likely a slightly later addition used to elevate the sphere for display but has a rich nice color and is early 20th century. It may even have been a pricket candlestick before its present use.
