About the Item

Attributed to Benedetto Boschetti, circa 1820-30. A superb Giallo Antico Tazza. The bowl, of square section, features an everted rim adorned with a finely carved egg-and-dart motif, beneath which runs an exceptionally executed foliate frieze. The fluted and striated body tapers into a collar decorated with a second egg-and-dart band. The outward-spreading stem is finely carved with fluting and a petal-edged border. The tazza is fitted with four handles, positioned at the centre of each side, attached to the bowl with leaf-shaped terminals. Viewed from above, the interior reveals a refined alternation of carved mouldings and floral paterae. The centre of the bowl is adorned with a high-relief petal motif, followed by a fluted section encircling a second, intricately carved floral rosette, also in pronounced relief. Height 40 cm, diameter 46 cm.

The tazza has an egg and dart carved outspreading rim of campagna design, with wrythen snake form naturalistic handles which twist over themselves in the most virtuosic fashion. Designing the handles alone would have required the skills of a master craftsperson.
