About the Artwork
“Colline” (1993) is a luminous double-sided oil on wood by celebrated Italian modernist Ettore Fico (1917 – 2004).
Painted on a sculptural wood block, the work can be viewed from both sides, revealing two expressive interpretations of the Piedmontese landscape.
One side bathes the rolling hills in radiant greens, lilac, and turquoise; the reverse glows with ochres and sienna, suggesting the same hills at sunset. Fico’s confident brushwork and vibrant chromatic contrasts reflect his lifelong fascination with light and nature, as well as his dialogue with the Post-Impressionists and Fauves.
The work is signed and dated “Fico 93” on the green landscape and retains its original studio label on the base, inscribed by the artist with the title “Colline” and his Turin address.
