About the Item

This stone tool was created in the Lower Palaeolithic (c.300,000-700,000 years ago) by our ancestors, homo heidelbergensis. In its iconic leaf-shaped form, it displays the convex surface of skilfully knapped flint, which has then been polished and patinated by millennia buried in the Earth. Widely accepted as the first, and longest lasting, human technology, these axes represent the profound technological and cognitive transformation of their creators. Through this deliberate shaping, early humans were able to produce finely balanced tools with sharp, symmetrical edges. As multi-purpose tools, they were vital instruments for survival, and their distribution today provides crucial evidence for early human migration and adaptation. With a custom desk base, it is one of the most recognisable artefacts of early human history and a timeless addition to any collection. Provenance From Port d'Envaux in the Charente-Maritime, north of Saintes, France; Collection of Mrs. G Feys, Vilvoorde, Belgium.
