About the Item

This exceptional example of an English 19th century Encaustic Tudor rose tile is presented in a rare blue colourway. Produced by W. Godwin circa 1870, this very clean, possibly unused 6-inch tile has a very clear stamp on the reverse with no traces of mortar or cement. Godwin Tiles Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
