About the Item
A late 19th / early 20th century arts and crafts peacock tile in the manner of 19th century English potter and tile designer, William De Morgan (1839-1917). Though this 6-inch tile is unmarked, it can be safely attributed to Carter
Co. Poole Pottery (1900-25) as the same design has been found on marked Carter
Co. tiles.
This tube-lined antique tile details a peacock bird, decorated with a brilliant range of varying blue, green and yellow enamel glazes to create bold and vibrant colours. It’s eye-catching design, inspired by similar peacock tiles made by William De Morgan, makes this arts and crafts tile an excellent stand-alone piece, perfect for a collector’s cabinet or decorative interior display.
CARTER
CO.
Carter Tiles, later Carter
Co, was founded in 1873 by Jesse Carter, a builder’s merchant and ironmonger from Surrey, who bought James Walker’s brick and tile business on the East Quay at Poole.
By the 1880s, Carters was competing with other manufacturers on a national level, before expanding in 1895.
In the early 20th century, the demand for decorative ceramics grew and Carter
Co. Poole Pottery went on to supply beautiful tiles to breweries, pubs, hospitals, schools, retailers, municipal authorities and many others all around the UK.
