About the Item

Late 19th century hand-carved 'Thun Rwa' horn was used commonly by the Ngakpa (lay Lamas) of Tibet. Used as a healing tool with medicinal/herbal powders, the tribe "Medicine Man" would blow the needed remedy upon his patients. This one has carat gold inlay along its beautifully carved horn-shaped body Museum quality piece has been mounted with blacked steel post Handsome Objet d'Art. Late 19th-Century Hand-Carved Ritual Thun-Rwa Horn with Gold Inlay Origin: Tibet or Nepal Period: Late 19th Century Materials: Carved horn, pigment, and gold inlay Dimensions: A finely carved ceremonial thun-rwa (ritual horn) depicting protective deities and mythic beasts in high relief, accented with traces of gilding and pigment. The form and detail suggest Himalayan monastic workmanship, likely from Tibet or Nepal, where such horns were traditionally used in tantric rites and ritual music to summon protective spirits or dispel negativity. The surface shows rich patina from age and ritual handling, with small areas of gold inlay and applied pigment that highlight the intricate carving. Presented on a custom museum-style metal stand. Condition: Excellent antique condition with expected wear, age-related surface variations, and minor losses consistent with use. Mounted for display. Metal base 3.25" x 2".
