About the Item
Carved from a mosaic-like rock, this striking sculpture is the lower grinding stone from a Gallo-Roman millstone - a powerful and aesthetic symbol of life two millennia ago. It is made from puddingstone, an extremely beautiful and hard sedimentary rock named after its appearance of a fruit-filled cake. Recognised throughout antiquity for its unique durability, it is formed from rounded flint pebbles embedded in a fine grained sandy matrix, with the pebbles displaying a variety of beautiful hues ranging from pinks, reds, oranges and soft greys. Used in this form for the daily task of grinding corn, it was key to survival in the first centuries AD. Combining a minimal aesthetic with deep historical significance, it is a timeless sculpture, symbolic of a bygone age.
