W. T. Copeland Tiles
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Copeland was a name synonymous with quality ceramics, porcelain and decorative tiles.
The firm’s origins date back to 1833 when William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett came into partnership, continuing the work of famed English potter, Josiah Spode, whose Stoke-on-Trent based earthenware and porcelain business had continued long after his death in 1797. Together, Copeland and Garrett manufactured stunning encaustic tiles inspired by medieval designs using untraditional colours.
Following Garrett’s retirement in 1847, William Thomas Copeland established W. T. Copland and Sons. The firm received praise and recognition across the globe for their tiles and fine ceramics. They became a significant player in the British ceramics industry throughout the 20th century, before reverting to the name ‘Spode’ in 1970.
