About the Item

18th century Italian gold leaf fragment with a faceted cut black crystal on a free-forming obsidian mineral with a polished face. Obsidian is naturally occurring volcanic glass produced when lava flowing from a volcano cools rapidly with minimum crystal growth. The obsidian face is polished to host the fragment. The hand-carved fragment is from Tuscany and came from a Rococo style church artifact. Interi transforms Italian artifacts and minerals using artistic methods and contemporary interpretations. The artifact is mounted onto the obsidian and adorned with the crystal to create an organic modern sculptural piece.
