About the Item
An extraordinary 50 million year old Diplomystus predator fish fossil specimen, collected from the important Green River Formation, in present day Wyoming, USA
- Species: Diplomystus sp.
- Period: Eocene Epoch
- Green River Formation
- Wyoming, United States of America
This well-preserved specimen of Diplomystus dentatus showcases the distinctive upturned mouth and deep body shape that separate the genus from the more common Knightia.
The fossil preserves fine detail along the vertebral column and fin rays, with natural articulation highlighting the fish's predatory adaptations. A pale Limestone matrix provides strong contrast, bringing out the darker mineralization of the skeletal remains.
Dating to the Eocene Epoch approximately 50 million years ago, the Green River Formation remains one of the most celebrated fossil beds in the world.
This specimen represents a classic predatory fish of the formation, a highly desirable addition for any fossil collection!
Interesting, historical and distinctly decorative, this outstanding specimen also makes for a fascinating natural artwork / decorative object, it's exceptional preservation and intricate details, bold contrasting dark fossilized skeleton against light mellow earthy organic toned stone, traditional fish form, and vicious prehistoric features add a uniquely dramatic presence, perfect for display!
