About the Item

This magnificent fossilised cross-section of a conifer tree trunk is a beautiful and vibrant piece of natural history. Originating from Northern Arizona, this prehistoric tree transformed – over millions of years – into a dazzling, vibrant stone. Its remarkable colours and banding are the result of permineralisation, a fossilisation process whereby minerals, transported in flowing waters, gradually replace the organic structure of the wood. Here, these mineral inclusions are mostly carbon, iron and manganese oxides, and have created magnificent hues of red, black, white and grey. Mounted on a bronze plate for easy wall display, this is a striking and poetic addition to any home or collection. Provenance From Northern Arizona Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs. ArtAncient are dealers in rare wonders from the formation of the Solar System to late antiquity, discovering, studying and placing objects in extraordinary collections. Fossilised Wood with Blue-Green Highlights
Located in London, GB
This striking fossilised wood cross-section, dating to the Miocene epoch (23-5 million years ago) and featuring paint-like streaks of greens, blues and browns, is a beautiful natural history specimen and impactful display piece. This is a magnificent example of the results of permineralisation, a process through which buried wood tissue, permeated by minerals transported in water, can transform into vibrant fossils. This particular example has fossilised over a copper deposit, resulting in the bright inclusions of copper minerals that manifest as impressive streaks of blue, green and red. This distinctive colouration is unique to Colla wood...
