About the Item

Very beautiful rustic unprocessed Coco de Mer. Never opened, still contains contents. On custom black stand. Coco de Mer is the palm tree with the largest coconuts in the world. It only grows on the Seychelles islands of Curieuse and Praslin. The growing location of the Coco de Mer was only discovered in 1768 by a French expedition. Before that time, its origin was a mystery. One of the theories was that they came from an unknown palm tree growing in the sea, hence the name Coco de Mer or sea coconut. This seed, with its somewhat erotic shape, was already assigned to a woman's buttocks in its scientific name. Lodoicea callypige, in which the species designation cally-pige means beautiful buttocks in ancient Greek. The Coco de Mer is a rare protected species and has been classified as 'endangered' on the IUCN Red List since 2007. Since they can no longer be exported from the Seychelles, they have become even more sought after and are a rare sight in Europe. Dimensions: 40H x 26W x 15D cm
