About the Item

This exceptional and highly sculptural mineral specimen from the celebrated “Dragon Scale Pocket,” is a particularly dazzling display piece. Uncovered during a single, now-legendary discovery at the Sweetwater Mine in 2019, this remarkable cluster presents a dramatic fan-like arrangement of lustrous calcite crystals in deep golden-green tones, layered in overlapping tiers that evoke the scaled hide of a dragon – an effect that gives these rare specimens their name. Formed deep within the hydrothermal vein systems of the Viburnum Trend, the minerals crystallised over millions of years through repeated cycles of mineral-rich fluid deposition under intense heat and pressure. The sharply defined calcite sprays rise from iridescent chalcopyrite, whose surface shimmers with hues of cobalt blue, deep violet and saturated magenta. This dazzling display is the result of natural surface oxidation over time and represents one of the finest visual expressions of chalcopyrite known from the region. Beautifully vibrant, it is a spectacular natural sculpture and a remarkable reminder of the forces of nature. Provenance Discovered at the Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend, Ellington, Reynolds Country, Missouri, USA in 2019 Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs.
