About the Item

This perfectly preserved botanical fossil, with blossoming leaves and small berries, is a remarkable snapshot of life 50 million years ago. The branch, splitting into three main offshoots, with delicate foliage and fruiting structures, has been identified as a member of the Araliacaea family (or ‘ginseng family’). A solitary leaf even displays the damage caused by leafcutter ants during its lifetime, while resting at its base is the partial fossil of a fish, both details enigmatic of the ecosystem of the early Eocene. In its crisp definition and subtle hues of brown and red, it is reminiscent of a Dutch still life painting. Yet, originating from the renowned Green River Formation, it is among the best preserved botanical fossils known to exist. With a sleek, metal baton mounted on the reverse, it is ready to be displayed on a wall or tabletop, as a timeless and elegant snapshot of the prehistoric world. Provenance Discovered by Liz Lindgren on Lewis Ranch, in the Green River Formation, Wyoming, 3 August 2021 Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs. Fossilised Wood with Blue-Green Highlights
Located in London, GB
This striking fossilised wood cross-section, dating to the Miocene epoch (23-5 million years ago) and featuring paint-like streaks of greens, blues and browns, is a beautiful natural history specimen and impactful display piece. This is a magnificent example of the results of permineralisation, a process through which buried wood tissue, permeated by minerals transported in water, can transform into vibrant fossils. This particular example has fossilised over a copper deposit, resulting in the bright inclusions of copper minerals that manifest as impressive streaks of blue, green and red. This distinctive colouration is unique to Colla wood...
