About the Item

This striking cross-section of fossilised Colla wood dates to the Miocene epoch, approximately 23–5 million years ago, and originates from the town of Zile in central Turkey – the only known source of this exceptionally rare fossil-type. With vibrant, natural inclusions, it is both a compelling piece of natural history as well as a magnificent decorative object. The fossil was formed through permineralisation, a geological process in which mineral-rich groundwater gradually infiltrates buried wood, replacing its organic structure. In Zile, this process occurred in proximity to copper deposits, resulting in the distinctive mineral inclusions seen here. In this example, luminous green and soft white highlights are complimented by streaks of blues and browns, almost mimicking painterly brushstrokes. The surface of this cross section has been expertly polished to fully reveal the rich colours. Mounted on bronze plate for easy wall-hanging, this fossilised wood section is an striking display piece, with its natural mineral inclusions particularly striking when spotlit. Fossilised Wood with Blue-Green Highlights
Located in London, GB
This striking fossilised wood cross-section, dating to the Miocene epoch (23-5 million years ago) and featuring paint-like streaks of greens, blues and browns, is a beautiful natural history specimen and impactful display piece. This is a magnificent example of the results of permineralisation, a process through which buried wood tissue, permeated by minerals transported in water, can transform into vibrant fossils. This particular example has fossilised over a copper deposit, resulting in the bright inclusions of copper minerals that manifest as impressive streaks of blue, green and red. This distinctive colouration is unique to Colla wood...
