Un magnifico frammento di vetro del deserto libico (Libyan Desert Glass), dal colore giallo miele con sfumature ambrate, recuperato tra le alte dune del Grande Mare di Sabbia, tra Egitto e Libia. A lungo rimasto un mistero per la comunità scientifica — alcuni ricercatori ipotizzarono addirittura un’origine lunare — questo straordinario materiale nacque dall’impatto esplosivo di un corpo extraterrestre che colpì la Terra circa 29 milioni di anni fa, generando un’energia sufficiente a fondere la sabbia del deserto a oltre 1.600 °C, una temperatura superiore a quella della lava più calda del pianeta. In quell’istante, la sabbia si liquefece trasformandosi in una tektite (dal greco tektos, “fuso”), formando il vetro di silice più puro conosciuto sulla Terra. Le sue superfici levigate e la forma scultorea sono il risultato di milioni di anni di erosione da parte dei venti aridi del deserto. L’esemplare qui proposto — dal peso di 178 grammi — presenta una texture ricca di vescicole naturali e riflessi interni che variano alla luce, montato su una base lignea tornita d’epoca con supporto in ferro brunito che ne esalta la presenza scultorea e contemplativa. Registrato scientificamente per la prima volta nel 1932, il vetro del deserto libico era conosciuto e venerato da millenni. Come l’ossidiana, veniva lavorato nel Neolitico per realizzare lame e amuleti; in epoca faraonica divenne simbolo di energia solare e rigenerazione. Il celebre pettorale di Tutankhamon conserva un scarabeo scolpito in LDG, chiamato dagli antichi egizi “la roccia di Dio”. Oggi, il suo fascino risiede nel contrasto tra la delicatezza eterea delle sue forme e la violenza cosmica dell’esplosione che gli diede origine: un frammento del cielo, solidificato sulla Terra. Un pezzo ideale per una Wunderkammer contemporanea, dove scienza, arte e mistero si fondono in un’unica materia.
