About the Item

This flower stand is made from a cross-section of a zelkova (keyaki) burl. Rather than a conventional timber cut, the piece originates from a naturally formed burl—an irregular growth created over many years—resulting in complex grain patterns, voids, and an organic silhouette that cannot be replicated. The top surface reveals dense, swirling grain and naturally occurring cavities formed through the tree’s long life. These openings are not carved or altered, but preserved as they were found, allowing the material itself to define the form. From different angles, the surface reads almost like a landscape, shifting subtly in character with light and shadow. The surface is left uncoated, allowing the natural texture and tone of the wood to be experienced directly. Moderate in scale yet rich in presence, the piece sits low to the ground and offers a stable base for display. It rests on three understated legs, also crafted from zelkova, providing stability without drawing attention away from the natural form of the burl itself. Used as a flower stand, display base, or sculptural platform, it invites objects to be placed thoughtfully, emphasizing balance and restraint rather than volume. More than a functional object, this piece reflects a Japanese sensibility that values the inherent character of natural materials. Creating a work of this quality today—using a single zelkova burl—would be extraordinarily difficult, making this a compelling example of wood used without compromise. Condition Notes: - Structure is sound and stable - Surface is uncoated, showing the natural texture and tone of the zelkova burl - Natural voids, openings, and irregularities are present and are inherent to the burl material - Surface shows minor age-related marks consistent with use and handling - Three zelkova legs are firmly attached and provide stable support Cleaned gently with water only. As an authentic vintage piece, this stand shows natural signs inherent to solid wood, including grain variation, natural voids, and minor surface marks. These characteristics reflect the material’s origin and authenticity, not defects. Please review all photos carefully—condition details are visible in the images—and feel free to contact us with any questions before purchasing. Approach to Selection and Restoration: Each piece is individually selected through our own eye, then restored to reveal its most compelling state. Movement, stability, and surface are considered as one—shaped through practice to be lived with naturally, honoring the wood’s natural patina while avoiding environmentally harsh chemical strippers or forceful abrasion.

Running Horse Weathervane on Display Stand
By L. W. Cushing Sons
Located in Atlanta, GA
A weathervane in the form of a running horse, that was likely modeled after "Dexter" circa late 19th century on a custom display stand. The full body molded horse has a gilt surface with verdigris patina. Not entirely sure of the maker but possible by L. W. Cushing & Co. In Waltham or Harris. Co in Boston. The surface has been re-gilt historically likely dated from early 20th century. A lovely piece that transcends American fold art...
