About the Item

This magnificent cross-section originates from the pallasite meteorite, Seymchan, which was formed over 4.5 billion years ago in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comprising 0.2% of all meteorites, pallasites are the rarest and most dazzling examples. The translucent olivine crystals are suspended in an iron-nickel matrix, which, beginning life as molten metal, eventually cooled over millions of years in the vacuum of space. This created the distinctive crystalline structure – known as the Widmanstatten pattern – that is indicative of its extraterrestrial origin. This example was discovered in 1967 by the geologist F. A. Mendikov in the bed of the River Hekandue in the Magadan region in the Russian far east. One surface has been etched to reveal the crystalline structure of the metal, while the other is finely polished, producing a reflective, metallic surface. With a sleek, custom bronze mount, it's particularly striking when spotlit as it highlights the ethereal translucency of the crystals. A mesmerising piece of natural history, it is a powerful display piece, and an enigmatic addition to any home or interior. Provenance Discovered in 1967, Magadan District, Russia (62° 54’ N, 152° 26’ E). Published Meteoritical Bulletin, no. 43, Moscow (1968). Sculptural Oriented Meteorite
Located in London, GB
Oriented Chondrite Meteorite Circa 4.56 Billion y/o Chondrite 24 x 20 cm, 28 cm tall on base 7.1 kg A sculptural and beautifully weathered chondrite meteorite; upon entering the atmosphere, this extraterrestrial stone would have heated the surrounding air to a temperature of over 1700 C, higher than that of the hottest lava on the planet, and enough to melt away its outer layers, leaving its surface rippled with regmaglypts, thumb-shaped impressions formed as superheated rock streaked off of the main body as it careened toward the earth. The last layer of the rock to melt would have re-solidified as the meteorite made impact, forming a charcoal coloured fusion crust, which has taken on a deep ochre-tinted patina. Chondrite meteorites such as this example were formed at the very beginning of our solar system, by the accretion of various types of dust and small grains, adrift in the vacuum of space and, as such, provide important clues about the birth of our own planet. This piece is an especially rare specimen, known as an oriented meteorite...
