Prehistoric Fossilized Hadrosaur Dinosaur Egg Nest Fossil, Cretaceous Period

About the Item

A large and extremely well preserved fossilized dinosaur nest, in outstanding condition, far superior to the vast majority of examples that appear on the market, which are often badly restored. This nest contains two eggs, of the family Hadrosauridae, dating to the late Cretaceous period (approximately 100 - 65 million years before present). Both eggs with much of the original shell, exhibiting wonderful veining and coloration. The nest has been painstakingly chiseled from its matrix (surrounding rock), a portion of which is visible at the bottom in the area of the original nest. The overall aesthetic of the piece is spectacular, and surpasses the vast majority of dinosaur eggs that appear on the market. The Hadrosaur is a long extinct dinosaur that inhabited our planet approximately 100 million years ago. At that time the Earth was markedly different to today, being formed of the Gondwanan and Laurasian Supercontinents and being largely sub-tropical in climate. Hadrosaur was a large, duck-billed beast weighing several tons that feasted on the plentiful Cretaceous vegetation. Paleontologists believe that the Hadrosaur was the most numerous dinosaur during the Cretaceous period, with the family growing in number and species from the Middle Cretaceous onwards. The Hadrosaur, along with the other dinosaurs, were completely eliminated during the cataclysmic K-T (Cretaceous-Tertiary) extinction event that occurred approximately 65.5 Million years ago. This egg is a precious remnant of a lost time, representing the unhatched young of real dinosaur which inhabited the ancient plains of this planet around 100 million years ago. Height: 6 inches.
