Striking wall mirror with handcarved 'blue thistles'. Via one of our foreign contacts we recently purchased this perfectly realistic thistle sculptures wall mirror. This all handcarved wooden frame displays a group of blue thistles (as they are called) and these very well carved wild flowers are gold painted which makes them stand out perfectly against the stained wooden background. We date this finest workmanship mirror to the midcentury era (1960s or 1970s) and apart from some minor fading of the original, beveled mirror itself, it could not be in better condition. Thanks to the brass brackets on the back mounting this stylish and artistic piece won't take more than a few minutes. Thanks to its unique design, this mirror could look the part in an Art Deco, in an Arts and Crafts, but also in a midcentury interior. It even has a touch of Hollywood Regency in it. Enormous and aesthetically marvelous, alabaster flower sculpture pendant. It is early in the new year, but we have already made a few new clients happy with some of our antique light fixtures and when we first saw this very large and deep alabaster work-of-art pendant we immediately felt that it could not take long to find a new owner for this antique gem either. Besides having a very large diameter, this is hands down the deepest alabaster shade that we ever had the pleasure of offering. For it to have been designed and fully hand carved in the shape of a flower makes it truly unique and exceptional. We salute the artisan who started out with an enormous rock of alabaster and carved this perfectly symmetrical flower out of that rock. Mind you, the rounded 'lips' of the petals are over an inch thick and you can see the details even from 20 feet away. Large and impressive church altar sculptures of Mother Mary and Saint John. These large and striking, mourning Mary and Saint John sculptures were once part of a church altar set. The partially flat sides of these works of religious art once stood against the bottom of an even larger church crucifix. All hand carved in the Arts & Crafts era, they both stood the test of time remarkably well and they have the most beautiful patina. The strained face and eyebrows of Mary show that she is in terrible pain at the sight of her deceased son. Both the quality of the postures and the details in the robes are two other elements that reveal the great workmanship of the artist/sculptor.
