About the Item

This exceptional Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth, embedded in a sedimentary matrix and surrounded by the jumbled remains of other dinosaurs, is a striking natural sculpture and display piece. Originating from the Lance Formation, the near adult sized Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth is remarkably preserved, with sharp, serrated edges and mahogany-like surface. It is surrounded by the jumbled remains of other prehistoric creatures, several hadrosaurs, the shoulder blade of an Edmontosaurus and another tooth from an Ankylosaurus (an armoured dinosaur). The matrix also bears a crocodile tooth, fragments of terrapin plastron, as well as enamel-covered scales from gar fish and other aquatic animals. The fossils are held together by a mixture of sand, mud and pebbles which is likely the result of a flood, where the creatures were washed downstream before settling and being buried. Mounted on a custom, bronze base, its deep orangey-brown hues that come alive when spotlit. At 65 million years old, it is a striking natural sculpture that displays an incredible snapshot of life right at the end of the reign of the dinosaurs. Provenance Lance Formation, Marchant Ranch Quarry, Niobrara County, Wyoming. Collected under lease by Western Paleo of Salt Lake City in 1992.
