Pair Bronze African Equestrian Warrior Sculptures

About the Item
The serpentine details on the neck appear in metal works from Mali to Cameroon, and the styling of the seated human figures is like that of Malian metal figures, as are the swords. The relatively unfinished feet are evocative of Dogon metal figures, yet the headgear bears similarities to that of some sub-Saharan tribes.
Acquired from the estate of a professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois, we believe these sculptures date from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Regardless, at a foot-and-a-half tall, they are quite striking, and it's clear why African art was such an inspiration to early Modern painters.
