A rare, and possibly unique, Art Deco period bronze sculpture, "Moods of Time" (Night) by Paul Howard Manship (1886-1966), designed for the 1939 New York World's Fair, on original marble base. Literature: Edwin Murtha, Paul Manship, New York, 1957, p.181 "FIGURES OF NIGHT. THE TWO MALE FIGURES FROM NO. 385 FLYING WITH CLOUDS'. Gilded bronze group 1938. Provenance: Purchased DIRECTLY from Paul Manship in 1958, with supporting documentation available. Paul Manship was "the country's most famous exponent of Art Deco. He embraced archaic vocabularies of Greek, Roman, and Indian art to create decorative, stylized, Neoclassical works. The statue in the fountain in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza, Prometheus (1933, is one of his famous works." Others are in major museums and collections worldwide. (Source: The Smithsonian Institution biography of the artist: http://americanart.si.edu/collections/search/artist/?id=3096) "The four allegorical figures, representing Morning, Day, Evening, and Night, were created for the 1939-40 New York World's Fair as hour markers in a large sundial and were located in a pool in front of the "Time Fates of Man" exhibit. The 2 male figures in this sculpture accompanied the female allegorical figure of Night flying through the moonlit, cloudy sky. The original plaster composition models used at the World's Fair in 1939-40 were destroyed, but Paul Manship made smaller bronze casts in the 1940s, of elements of the Moods of Time which he kept for himself." Theme of the Moods of Time Sculpture Installation: "The sculptures embody the mood associated with each phase of the daily cycle. Manship used fluid, aerodynamic lines to create a sense of motion and to reflect the celestial passage. Morning sleepily yawns and stretches as he is roused by a rooster, trumpeter, and a small figure pulling the cloth of night from his body. Day carries the hot sun in his outstretched hands. Wind rushes through his hair as he races the two horses at his feet. His energy is juxtaposed with Evening who is lulled into drowsiness by owls as darkness sets in. Finally, Night soars above a cloud in deep slumber. She is accompanied by the moon and two male figures while she takes her flight through dreams".
