About the Item

Domenico da Venezia was one of the greatest exponents of the Venetian production of majolica in the second half of the 16th century, well documented through jugs, albarelli, pharmacy vases richly decorated with flowers, fruits, leaves, cartouches and medallions with male and female faces and busts. His style found its full accomplishment in the Venetian mannerism, in which he expressed himself with great freedom and individuality through innovative and recognizable creations for the unmistakable shine of the glazes and the wise use of polychrome, combining the typical blue background with the intense ocher, the faded yellow and the bright green. These characteristics, together with other elements that distinguish the production of Domenico da Venezia, are clearly visible also in this splendid albarello that, to this day, keeps intact its brilliant polychrome. The entire surface of the vase is painted with a flower and leafy decoration on an intense blue background, from which stand out flowers like daisies - with five or six white petals that wind around a central yellow and blue button - typical of the creations by Domenico from Venice. the floral decoration is interrupted only by a medallion on the back of the jug we find the figure of a saint. Domenico manages to give his figures a fluid and sensual body thanks to the skillful use of color, using a game of contrasts and shading. In its majolica is enclosed the whole tradition of Venetian color. Creations from the workshop of Mastro Domenico are preserved in major public and private collections throughout Europe and significant nuclei are visible at the Correr Museum in Venice and at the Bargello National Museum in Firenze.
