This is a attractive, high quality, 19th Century Victorian period, crystal cut glass bottle or Jar with a heavy sterling silver lid, handmade and fully hallmarked by William Leuchars, Piccadilly, London, 1881. The bottle or jar sits on a small foot and has an oval shape with vertical flutes that are hand-cut in panel sections. It has a heavy 41 gram sterling silver top or lid which has been made by silversmith William Leuchars of Piccadilly, London and fully hall marked London 1881 (F), the silversmith being registered between 1876 and 1889. It is nice to find a piece which is plain and not engraved with a monogram. The inside of the lid is also stamped as they were Retailers as well as silversmiths in London and Paris. The lid is a very good push fit to the glass jar This is a high quality, very good decorative and useful piece for the desk or dressing table and the jar could be used to hold a variety of items or just as a decorative silver topped bottle. LEUCHARS Leuchars was established at 47 Piccadilly, London in 1794 by James Leuchars. In 1820, the business moved to 38 Piccadilly shortly before James Leuchars died in 1823. Lucy Leuchars, James’ widow, continued the business under the name of L. Leuchars. In 1837, the same year as Queen Victoria came to the throne, the firm was awarded the Royal Warrant for their supply of dressing cases to the royal family. Expanding to 39 Piccadilly in 1841, the name had now changed to Lucy Leuchars Son; the ‘Son’ referring to William Leuchars. After Lucy’s death in 1847, William gained sole responsibility for the business. Leuchars exhibited and won prize medals for his dressing cases at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862, winning a further silver medal at the International Exposition of 1867 in Paris. In 1870, under the name of Leuchars Son, William Leuchars along with his son, also called William, opened a further shop at 2 Rue de la Paix in Paris. When William Sr died in 1871, William Jr took control of the business, later winning a gold medal for their dressing cases at the International Exposition of 1878 in Paris. William Leuchers registered as a Silversmith in London between 1876 and 1889 producing high quality items In 1884, Leuchars moved their existing manufactory from 31 Gerrard Street, Soho, London to 8 Sherwood Street, Golden Square, London. William Jr finally agreed to sell the business, along with their Sherwood Street manufactory, to Asprey in 1888. Leuchars continued to trade from their 38 39 Piccadilly address until 1902.

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique German silver and glass jar; an addition to our diverse range of continental silverware. This exceptional antique German 800 standard silver box has a circular shaped form. The jar is fitted with a push fit silver cover realistically modelled in the form of a stemmed apple. The antique glass body of the jar has a subtly panelled form and is ornamented with cut glass decoration in a geometric design, in addition to a star cut motif to the underside. The upper rim of the jar is fitted with a hallmarked silver mount.
