About the Item

Neodymium glass (also called Alexandrite glass) was first produced in the early 20th century, after Alexandrite crystals were discovered in 1885 and neodymium oxide was used to colorize glass. The first commercial use of neodymium in glass was by Leo Moser of Moser Glassworks in 1920s. Neodymium glass is dichroic, which means it shows as two different colors, depending on the type of light shining through it. In sunlight, neodymium glass looks lavender, and in fluorescent light it looks blue; the shades can vary greatly depending on the glass mixture. On its own, neodymium is not UV reactive; some manufacturers added Selenium into their glass matrix, which resulted in the bright pink fluorescent glow under UV light. Glass artist Dale Chihuly has used neodymium in several of his glass sculptures, chandeliers, and other pieces; other current neodymium glassmakers are studio artists in USA and Europe. The bottle is signed and dated on the bottom by the artist. Leonard DiNardo (1944-2024) was an established American glass artist from New Jersey. He attended the former Newark State College, where he received a degree in industrial arts. As a high school arts teacher, he began working with stained glass as part of a crafts program; as his interest in art glass grew, he left teaching and started his intensive studies at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and the Pilchuck Glass Center in Stanhope, Washington, in mid 1970s. In both places, he encountered Ann Wärff, renowned sculptor and designer and a founding figure in International Studio Glass, who was visiting glass-making centers in the United States, and received an invitation to work in Sweden as Ann Wärff's assistant. While working at Kosta Boda and Orrefors, he also was able to study at a school near the Orrefors Glassworks. After returning to USA, DiNardo opened his own studio in 1979; he was represented by multiple galleries nationwide and had shown his work at exhibitions and craft events both in USA and internationally. The rare, early work of the artist, with sculptural form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence, will make a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Organic Modern, Modernist, Transitional, Scandinavian Modern, Art Deco, Mid Century Modern, Collected, or Contemporary.

Michael Shearer Art Deco Amethyst and Clear Vase, California Art Glass, UV Glow
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural Art Deco style vase was hand blown in clear glass enclosed in the amethyst glass base. The piece is signed by the artist on both sides of the vase near the bottom with "Michael Shearer 1985". The vase is in good vintage condition; please note a small air bubble inside the clear portion of the glass, that is not a flaw, but a part of hand-blown glass process, and it does not detract from overall beauty and quality of the piece. Amethyst glass part of the vase glows in UV light. Michael Shearer (1946-2021) was an established glass artist who studied art in Costa Mesa College and opened his first studio in Hermosa Beach, California, in 1976; in 1983 he moved the studio to Laguna Niguel...

Jon Kuhn Early Sculptural Op-Art Vase, American Art Studio Glass, 1982
By Jon Kuhn
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Triangular faceted vase features a graphic pattern of ruby red, white, and dichroic glass encased in clear glass layers in sommerso technique. The body of the vase is cut and polished in triangular shape, exposing complex, colorful core; the subtle sheen of dichroic glass adds complexity and visual interest to a reserved color scheme. The vase is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom; this rare, hard to find example of American studio glass would make a great gift to any studio glass, art collector, or modern design enthusiast. Jon Kuhn is one of the foremost glass artists in his field, creating highly intricate architectural glass art sculpture that has won world-wide acclaim. He received BFA from Washburn University in 1974, MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and Honorary DFA from Washburn University in 2006. Jon Kuhn early work was done in molten glass, but currently he works in cold glass that is cut, polished, and fused, resulting in sculptures that take in surrounding light, then reflects and refracts it back; they appear to change color and radiance when viewed from different angles and lighting. Kuhn creates cold glass art in a variety of shapes and forms, but he is perhaps best known for his glass cubes which contain a colorful glass interior cased in clear glass. Kuhn’s work stands out for its complexity, its geometric forms, and for its mesmerizing presence. Jon Kuhn glass...
