About the Item

A distinctive squat bottle vase handblown by Mdina Glass in Malta during the 1970s, designed in the signature ‘Ming’ style developed by founder Michael Harris. Compact yet visually dynamic, the form features a rounded, almost globular body rising into a short neck with a gently flared lip. The glass surface is richly worked in layered azure blues—both opaque and translucent—interwoven with spiralling ribbons of gold that rise organically from the base. The neck reveals the hallmark ‘Ming’ marbling: an expressive fusion of deep blue veining over a luminous turquoise ground, evoking painterly movement within the glass itself. Measuring 14 cm in height with a 13 cm diameter, this piece is signed Mdina to the underside. It remains in very good vintage condition, with only minimal signs of age and handling.

Turquoise Glass Squat Bottle Vase in Mdina ‘Ming’ Pattern, Signed 1979, Malta
By Michael Harris, Mdina
Located in Glasgow, GB
A rare signed Mdina Glass vase from Malta, dated 1979, exemplifying the studio’s bold aesthetic during its formative years. This decorative squat bottle vase is worked in the celebrated ‘Ming’ pattern, with swirling bands of turquoise blue and deep green glass layered over a base of sparkling golden ochre. The colours twist upward in irregular spirals around the rotund body, forming a richly tactile surface that captures the light beautifully. This form—low, broad, and full-bodied—is less commonly encountered, particularly in this scale. Measuring 16.5 cm in both height and diameter, it’s a commanding example of vintage Mdina glass...
