About the Item
This set of nine Mid-Century Modern sculptural ceramic vessels exemplifies the refined clarity and geometric restraint that shaped European design in the postwar decades. Created between the late 1940s and 1960s, the group includes works attributed to Laach Abbey, Ulmer Keramik, and other West German workshops, several bearing marks or numerical stamps common to the region’s studio pottery.
Influenced by Bauhaus principles, these vessels balance functional purity with expressive form. Many incorporate symbolic motifs such as the Alpha
Omega, Chi-Rho, cross, or dove, reflecting the unique intersection of modernist design and spiritual iconography explored by Theodor Bogler and the Laach Abbey ceramics workshop. Though originally conceived for liturgical use, the pieces now read as sculptural objects—minimalist, architectural, and striking in their presence.
The set presents a curated palette of sage, teal, grey, and earthy neutrals, with surfaces ranging from matte to softly glazed. Forms vary from tall tapering cylinders to compact rounded vessels, creating a visually cohesive ensemble that works beautifully as a Wunderkammer grouping, shelf display, or standalone vignette.
In excellent vintage condition with light wear consistent with age, this complete set of nine offers a rare opportunity to collect authentic Mid-Century Modern ceramics that bridge artisanal craft, modernist design, and symbolic meaning.
