About the Item

This decoration with a Japanese landscape was made by the Baccarat crystal factory around 1880. Founded under Louis XV, the French crystal factory Baccarat demonstrated its excellence at Universal Exhibitions throughout the 19th century. This ruby crystal trim is made up of two vases and a planter. The whole is emblematic of the quality of the crystal works. The gold enamelled decorations of the vases represent a Japanese landscape with Far Eastern fauna and flora. The wading birds are particularly characteristic. The planter is decorated with an aquatic landscape flown over by wild geese. A vast golden sun emerges from a mountainous background. The transparent crystal handles are also decorated with decorative gold motifs. Each element of the trim is assembled. The crystal maker's stamp, affixed since 1875, shortly before the creation of this piece, is found under the base of the gilded bronze frame.

BACCARAT, Pair of Vases with Japonist Decoration of Flowering Trees and Birds
By Baccarat
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This pair of vases with Japanese-style decoration was made by the Baccarat glasshouse around 1880. Founded under Louis XV, the French Baccarat crystal factory demonstrated its excellence at the Universal Exhibitions throughout the 19th century. The company created these square vases in black crystal resting on a bronze frame. These works are adorned with a natural, highly poetic decoration executed using the technique of hot enamelling in relief. The bright colours stand out clearly against the background, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail that went into this decoration. The black colour of hyalite crystal is obtained by injecting slag or sulphur into the glass. This dark background enhances the painted decoration. In this case, it was used to create a decoration in imitation of Chinese or Japanese lacquer...
