This 20th-century field-fired terracotta olive jar originates from Western Anatolia, where traditional open-flame firing techniques produced vessels rich in texture and tonal variation. Originally used to store olive oil, the jar retains the solid, practical form of its working past — broad-shouldered, tapering, and balanced by a narrow rim. Its surface bears the rich evidence of its making: a natural blackened glaze from high-heat firing, splashed with mineral pigments and kiln glaze deposits that settled irregularly during the process.
