About the Item

This sculptural biomorphic vase, produced by Fábrica Aleluia in Portugal during the 1950s, represents one of the most imaginative and cosmopolitan phases of the factory’s mid-century faience production. Known for redefining Portuguese ceramic modernism, Aleluia developed a unique visual grammar that combined international influences with distinctly local sensibilities, resulting in pieces that stand apart within the European ceramic landscape. From the 1950s onward, the factory moved away from classical forms, embracing sinuous asymmetries, flowing contours, and hollowed sculptural volumes—an approach clearly embodied in this model. The vase follows an organic looped structure that twists and expands, creating an interplay of movement and negative space that shifts with every angle. This particular example is highly distinctive for its bold color scheme: a combination of cream, black, and bright orange on the exterior, contrasted with a smooth sky-blue interior and mother-of-pearl luster highlights. The surface is animated by hand-drawn star motifs, adding a graphic rhythm that enhances the vase’s dynamic geometry. The piece is in good original vintage condition, showing only light, age-appropriate wear. A rare and expressive example of Aleluia’s mid-century sculptural design, and a standout within the factory’s more experimental production lines.
