About the Item

This sculptural biomorphic vase, produced by Fábrica Aleluia in Portugal during the 1950s, is an exceptional example of the factory’s most modern and expressive phase. Aleluia was responsible for one of the most cosmopolitan faience productions in mid-century Portugal, distinguished by inventive forms and a bold decorative language that set it apart from both national and international ceramic makers. By the 1950s, the factory’s designers shifted from classical silhouettes toward dynamic, asymmetrical structures that explored movement, negative space, and the fluidity of organic curves—qualities fully embodied in this model. The elongated looped form, carved open at the centre, creates a sculptural presence that reads differently from every angle. Its high-gloss black and white exterior is punctuated by vibrant geometric accents in red, yellow, and white, while the interior reveals the delicate iridescence of light-blue and yellow luster glazes over fine craquelure. Overall, the vase remains in good original vintage condition, with normal age-related wear. A small chip to the rim is present, as shown in the photographs, but it does not compromise the structural integrity of the piece and is reflected in the price. A collectible and highly characteristic example of Aleluia’s mid-century modernist ceramics.
