About the Item

Produced during the 1950s by Fábrica Aleluia in Aveiro, this geometric vase reflects the factory’s decisive embrace of international Modernist principles during the mid-century period. At this time, Aleluia distanced itself from the decorative excesses associated with Art Nouveau and certain strands of Art Deco, instead developing a distinctly modern vocabulary rooted in structural clarity, graphic precision, and chromatic restraint. This vase is a representative expression of that shift. Its architecture recalls the constructive simplicity present in the work of Czech designer Pavel Janák (1882–1956), whose Cubist explorations in the decorative arts similarly used geometry as a generative force. The form is reduced and balanced: a compressed spherical body supporting an elongated, flaring neck, both unified by an applied linear rhythm. Vertical black and orange strokes radiate across the surface, creating a dynamic graphic tension that accentuates the volume of the piece. A vivid yellow band at the neck introduces a subtle but effective chromatic counterpoint, while the interior reveals a saturated orange glaze, adding depth and warmth. The vase remains in good original vintage condition, with age-appropriate craquelure and some small chips on the base, clearly shown in the photographs. A strong and collectible example of Aleluia’s graphic mid-century modernism.
