About the Item
This Amlash Openwork Terracotta Tripod Jar, dating from circa 1200–800 BC, is a striking example of ancient craftsmanship from the region of northwestern Iran. Crafted from terracotta, the vessel features a bulbous body elevated on three pointed tripod legs, offering both structural stability and visual dynamism.
This jar is notable for its openwork design. The upper section is punctuated by tall, triangular-shaped slits, creating an architectural rhythm around the circumference. These slits are framed by rows of punched decorative dots and raised rounded bosses, which add texture and ceremonial character to the vessel.
The jar is topped with a flared rim and features a single, arching handle, suggesting it may have been used for ritualistic or symbolic purposes rather than purely utilitarian ones. The piece emanates an ancient aesthetic rooted in both function and ornament, highlighting the sophistication of Amlash pottery in the Late Bronze to Early Iron Age.
Provenance: From a private UK collection; previously part of a longstanding British collection assembled during the 1990s.
