About the Item
This strikingly modern ancient Greek mug is a sleek and elegant example of Attic black-glaze pottery at its height. Developing in Athens in the 8th century BC, the straight-sided, cylindrical mug, with seven horizontal ribs and an applied ring handle, is covered in an iron-rich clay slip that turned glossy black during firing. From the 6th to the third centuries, Athens exported these finely made works across all parts of the Mediterranean. This piece’s dark, lustrous sheen and perfect form offers minimalism at the same time as historic significance, making it a timeless and characterful object.
