About the Item
This medium-sized Echizen ware jar, a representative example of ancient Japanese pottery, is believed to have been produced during the late Muromachi period to the Azuchi-Momoyama period (late 15th century to 16th century), even earlier than the Edo period. Echizen ware is a historic kiln located in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. It is considered one of the "Six Ancient Kilns of Japan" and is said to have originated around the 12th century. While the two jars share common design elements, incorporating techniques from Tokoname ware in Aichi Prefecture, my experience suggests that Echizen ware has a more refined and taut form.
(The red circle on the map indicates the Echizen kiln.)
One of the defining features of Echizen ware is its sloping shoulders. This is clearly evident in this piece. The gently flared neck and shoulders, tapered midway through the body, are typical proportions of Echizen jars. The rim also retains the distinctive features of the 15th and 16th centuries, adding to its historical value.
The glaze is not artificially applied; it is a natural glaze (shizen-yu), formed when wood ash falls on the vessel during firing, melting and vitrifying it. The contrast between the pale yellow-green glaze that appears toward the top and the reddish earthenware of the base encapsulates the beauty of this vase. The scenery created by the kiln changes is quiet and deep, with the subdued presence unique to pottery that has aged for so long.
The condition is generally good, with no cracks or major defects visible. As this is an extremely ancient vase, staining may occur if water is poured directly into it. When using it as a flower vase, we recommend placing a cylindrical container inside.
With a size that is neither too large nor too small, this piece maintains its refined form, adding a sense of quiet tension and a touch of "wabi" (wabi) to any space simply by placing it there. This exquisite vase embodies the skill and aesthetic sense of medieval Japanese potters. It also blends well with modern spaces and has a striking presence as an object.
We highly recommend this item.
Additionally, please refer to the Japanese art book "Echizen Ware Masterpieces Illustrated Guide," which features a vase from the same era as this piece.
