About the Item
Descendant of a family of glass workers, Odilón Ávalos Razo, was born in Puebla in 1881. He came to Guadalajara attracted by the economic and Industrial development that characterized the city in the last decades of the Porfiriato, especially during the governments of Ramón Corona and Luis C. Curiel. Odilón was the introducer of an industry that today is representative of the crafts of Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, the industry of blown glass, brought to Guadalajara in 1903, by this artist of glass.
In Guadalajara he started his workshop in front of the garden of Analco, and later moved it to the street of Catalán, current Avenida Revolución. One of Odilón's hobbies was to create extraordinary and fantastic pieces. However, for years it rarely transpired to the public some of his works, because they used to model them in private and then place them on the shelves of a high room that he kept closed, almost in secret, where he used to go, perhaps, to admire himself the beauty of his creation.
In the year of 1954, the Government of the State of Jalisco, granted Don Odilón Ávalos, the highest award that pays tribute and is dedicated to artists: "The Jalisco Prize." Even when this encouragement of his adoption status, he was granted time after the recognitions he received at the New York and Seville fairs. In the latter, he received a very special greeting from King Alfonso XIII. Odilón Ávalos died in Guadalajara in 1957, after having enriched the handicrafts of Jalisco with the beauty of the shapes and the coloring of the blown glass crafts.

It is rare to find an Odilón Avalos piece still with its label and even more so with the "O. Avalos" one. Generally they are found but only with the surname: Avalos. It is a small but very collectible piece.
